John Kennedy Toole, geboren 1937 in New Orleans, schrieb 'Die Verschwörung der Idioten' während seines Militärdienstes in Puerto Rico. Jahrelang suchte er vergeblich nach einem Verleger, 1969 nahm er sich das Leben. Elf Jahre später veröffentlichte ein kleiner Universitätsverlag das Manuskript auf Drängen der Mutter. 1981 erhielt der Autor postum den Pulitzer-Preis, und der Roman ist bis heute Kult.
