Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth.This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

3.1 Introduction:
India is a very vast country. The country is divided into 35 administrative units known as the states and union territories. At present there are 28 states and 7 union territories in India. Geographically we can divide India in several geographical regions. These are northern region, central region, western region, eastern region, southern region and north-eastern region.
The north-eastern region of the country, as is clear from the name, is located in the north-eastern part of India. This region has ist own specific characteristics that are distinct from other regions. The region comprises of 8 states namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura and almost all the states are having geographically strategic location, as almost all of them have international borders, adjoining with different countries, namely Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, China, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Tripura is a state in north east India. The state extends from 22°56'N to 24°32'N, and 91°09'E to 92°20'E. The third-smallest state in the country, it covers 10,491 km (4,051 Sq. Mi.) and is bordered by Bangladesh to the north, south, and west, while the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram situated to ist east. Five mountain ranges run north to south, with intervening valleys. The state has a tropical savanna climate, with seasonal heavy rains from the south west monsoon. Forests cover more than half of the area, providing remarkable biodiversity for such a small area, and are a source of livelihood for many tribes. Bamboo and cane forests are common, while Tripura has the highest number of primate species found in any Indian state. During winter, temperatures range from 13 to 27 °C (55 to 81 °F), while in the summer they fall between 24 and 36 °C (75 and 97 °F).

October, 1949 as Group-C category State. It became a Union Territory on 1st July, 1963. Tripura became a full-fledged State on the 21st January, 1972. At present, the State has 8 Districts, 23 Sub-divisions, and also one Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was set up in 1982 under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, which brought under the Sixth Schedule in 1985. The TTAADC covers about 2/3rd of the total area of the State.
3.3 Population:
The Registrar General of India has released the provisional population figures of Census-2011.The provisional population of Tripura in 2011 was 36,71,032 out of which 18,71,867 males and 17,99,165 females. The population of Tripura has increased 4,71,829 during the decade 2001-2011. Decadal growth of population in the State during 2001-2011 was 14.75 percent and males growth were 13.98 percent and females were 15.55 percent, respectively. For India, the decadal growth rate during 2001-2011 was 17.64 percent, out of which males decadal growth rate were 17.19 percent and females were 18.12 percent. The sex ratio has increased by 13 points in the State and reached to 961 in 2011 as against 948 in 2001. On the other hand, the similar sex ratio at the national level has increased by 7 points and reached to 940 in 2011 as against 933 in 2001.
The population of Tripura is characterized by social diversity. The people of the Scheduled Tribes (STs) comprise about one-third of the population. As per Census-2001, ST population comprises 31 percent of the total population of the State. There are 19- sub tribes among the ST population of the State with their own cultural identity, namely (1) Tripuri,(2) Reang, (3) Jamatia, (4) Chakma, (5) Lusai, (6) Mog, (7) Garo, (8) Kuki, (9) Chaimal, (10) Uchai, (11) Halam, (12) Khasia, (13) Bhutia, (14) Munda, (15) Orang, (16) Lepcha, (17) Santal, (18) Bhil and (19) Noatia.
