Jacob Chr. Burckhardt (1818-97) begann seine akademische Laufbahn 1837 auf Wunsch seines Vaters mit dem Studium der evangelischen Theologie in Basel, wobei er sich schon damals nebenher mit Philologie und Geschichte beschäftigte. Nach seinem Wechsel nach Berlin wandte er sich vollends dem Studium der Geschichte, Philologie und Kunstgeschichte zu. Ab 1845 war er außerordentlicher Professor in Basel und wurde 1855 ordentlicher Professor für Kunstgeschichte in Zürich; 1858 übernahm er den Lehrstuhl für Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte in seiner Heimatstadt Basel.
