This book, 40 Years of Agony, is inspired by true events of the author, which takes you through the twist-and-turn journey of a man who devoted his whole life in search of freedom. At times, he had nothing to lose, and at times, he had to lose even his own life so as to take on extreme challenges. It reveals to you the incredible sufferings, tribulation, desperation, endless anxiety, and more that are beyond human endurance. But one man, alone, overcame all. Nothing could stop him.
It also depicts cruelties of the Vietnam War that killed more than three million Vietnamese. Tragically, the war disabled lives in dire humiliation. They had no place to hide, and they were hated by their own loved ones for they became burdens, or calamities, to those who related to them. Not only war reduced cities to rubble, it also created human tragedy beyond comprehension.
This book, 40 Years of Agony, certainly takes you to the killing field in Cambodia, the convoy of tears in Vietnam, and the Vietnamese boat people. According to UNHCR, more than a million Vietnamese escapees perished in the South China Sea, including his wife and child. From it, you can fathom the ugliest, darkest side of man, for man is man’s worst enemy.

Autoren-Porträt von Joker Lam
To the peace-loving Vietnamese, he was a hero. To the Vietnamese Government, he was a traitor, no more no less. To The Singapore Government, he was a hijacker, hard core prisoner. To the UN HCR, he was a mandate refugee. To The Vietnamese Refugees in Galang Camp, he was a tomb raider. Give him a name!Yes, he raided tombs and it was his last job paid by two Australian Citizens. It financed him to reach Australia and put an end to his 62 year saga, evading, fighting and escaping Communist. His endurance was beyond ones’ imagination. He was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in the infamous Changi Prison for hijacking airplane. 2 years in the Hawkins’ road Refugees Camp in Singapore. 7 years in Galang Refugees Camp in Indonesia. 3 months in Batam Prison. 10 years wandering on the Indonesia streets, homeless, stateless. 40 months in Australia Detention Centers.
After all these turbulent years of life, he grew stronger and stronger at last, even in agony or in happiness. Nothing could deter him to do what he must do because his destiny dictated him to act fast for time is killing him. This book was written while he was detained in Christmas Island Detention Center.
