Life is about experiencing the thrill of victories and the agony of defeats, which is something Gabe "Fireball" Nelson understood well. A professional baseball pitcher/ coach in Atlanta for twenty-three years, he grew weary of being in the spotlight and facing constant media attention. Gabe retired from baseball and sought a life of anonymity. He wanted to live in an area where he wouldn't be easily recognized, and the little town of Jackson, South Carolina appeared to be the perfect choice.
While Gabe and his wife were adjusting to their new life, Tyler Watkins was facing hurdles of his own. At age six, Tyler's father passed away, and he withdrew into a shell. Two years later, things hadn't improved, and his mother was concerned about his emotional development. She decided to move to Jackson and hoped the change would help end Tyler's grieving.
After meeting Tyler, Gabe felt he possessed something that might help his young friend a passion for baseball. While mentoring Tyler in baseball and life, Gabe realized he had been missing something he loved dearly interacting with the fans.
What follows is a heartwarming story about a growing relationship, as Gabe's passion becomes Tyler's, and a dream of playing on green diamonds is born. This enlightening sports story is appropriate for all ages and genders.
Nature, fishing, golf, and watching his grandchildren play sports, especially baseball, are things Tom loves. His passion for baseball started when he was a child, and he enjoys coaching and teaching his grandsons about America's greatest pastime. As a pitcher back in the good ole days of his youth, he loved being one of the nine players on the green diamond . . . part of a team and having the responsibility that comes with being in charge. Standing on the mound with a one run lead, bases loaded, and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning provides an adrenaline rush that makes one appreciate being alive. The pressures of the moment, coupled with the will to complete the task for the team is one of the best feelings a person can have. It's what sports, teamwork, life, and believing is all about. Win or lose, experiencing similar types of situations in life helps build character and determines the type of person we ultimately become.
Tom had a childhood dream to play professional baseball and pursued his dream with passion. Unfortunately, he wasn't blessed with the talent necessary to fulfill that dream. Not to worry . . . it wasn't meant to be, and that's what life is all about. You move on, and learn to pursue new dreams. What Tom has found in his adulthood is a gift for telling and writing stories. He said that writing a book about sports . . . baseball . . . was a wonderful experience, and he enjoyed watching it come together. The same passion he had long ago for baseball has transferred into a current passion for writing novels, and that's a good thing. The chance to bring some of his experiences to life in
Now . . . it's time to yell, "Play ball!"
