The subject of competition between religion and television has, if only indirectly, received considerable attention, particularly from religionists disturbed by the threat posed by television programming to traditional religious beliefs, values, and attitudes. JAY NEWMAN is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Guelph. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a past president of the Canadian Theological Society. He is author of eight books including Religion vs. Television: Competitors in Cultural Context (Praeger, 1996), On Religious Freedom (1991), and The Journalist in Plato's Cave (1989). His numerous articles have appeared in such journals as Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious Studies.
