Economic potential, particularly in cobalt and copper mining, is hampered by corruption, mismanagement, and conflict-driven violence, particularly in the eastern provinces. Concurrently, historical factors, including the colonial legacy and the aftermath of regional wars, intertwine with contemporary challenges, such as neo-patrimonialism and social identity politics. International actors, including the United States, United Nations, and European Union, have intervened with diplomatic efforts and economic aid, but the DRC's complexity necessitates nuanced, long-term strategies.
