Klappentext zu „1945 Capitulation in Northern Italy “
Zu Beginn des Jahres 1945 hatte sich die Lage für Deutschland bereits sehr kritisch entwickelt, wie ein Skizze Waibels auf Seite 74 d.B. zeigt. Der norditalienische Raum war für die Verbindung mit den Kräften in Jugoslawien, wie auch für die "Festung Europa" von besonderer Bedeutung. Max Waibel war nicht Initiant der Kapitulation in Norditalen, aber als sich sein Freund Dr. Max Husmann, der seinerseits von Baron Luigi Parilli angegangen worden war, an ihn wendete, war er sofort bereit, sich einzusetzen, wie er auch im "Offiziersbund" seinem Gewissen gefolgt war und das Handeln ohne oder gar gegen Befehl - wie es schon General Ulrich Wille duldete - gewagt hatte. Die Arbeit war überaus gefährlich, ja abenteuerlich und drohte immer wieder zu scheitern, bis Waibel schließlich alles wagte, entscheidend eingriff, so dass am 29. April um 14 Uhr in Caserta, nördlich von Neapel die Unterzeichnung der Kapitulation stattfinden konnte, die am 2. Mai um 12 Uhr in Kraft trat. Die Gesamtkapitulation der deutschen Streitkräfte erfolgte dann erst am 8./9. Mai 1945. Der immer wieder bremsende Allen W. Dulles gestand daher in seinem Bericht "The secret surrender" 1966: ".wären wir ohne Waibels Hilfe fast bei jedem Schritt auf Schwierigkeiten gestoßen" Seine Mitarbeit sei daher unschätzbar gewesen.
