This edition is translated, with an Afterword, by Brian Murdoch, Professor of German at Stirling University.
Autoren-Porträt von Erich Maria Remarque
Erich M. Remarque, geb. 1898 in Osnabrück, besuchte das katholische Lehrerseminar. 1916 als Soldat eingezogen, wurde er nach dem Krieg zunächst Aushilfslehrer, später Gelegenheitsarbeiter, schließlich Redakteur in Hannover und Berlin. 1932 verließ Remarque Deutschland und lebte zunächst im Tessin/Schweiz. Seine Bücher 'Im Westen nichts Neues' und 'Der Weg zurück' wurden 1933 von den Nazis verbrannt, er selber wurde 1938 ausgebürgert. Ab 1941 lebte Remarque offiziell in den USA und erlangte 1947 die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft. 1970 starb er in seiner Wahlheimat Tessin.
