Averil Cameron lehrte als Professorin Alte, Spätantike und Byzantinische Geschichte am King's College London und an der Universität Oxford. Ihre Publikationen gehören zu den viel beachteten Standardwerken auf diesem Gebiet. Sie war Herausgeberin der Bände 12 bis 14 der neuen Cambridge Ancient History und engagierte sich in diversen Kommissionen u.a. auch für Belange der Denkmalpflege. Für ihre Verdienste erhielt sie eine Reihe von Ehrendoktorwürden und wurde von der Königin als Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in den persönlichen Adelsstand erhoben.
