Jenny Nimmo war schon als Kind eine ungeheure Leseratte. Nachdem sie alle Bücher der Schulbibliothek ausgelesen hatte, fing sie an, sich eigene Geschichten auszudenken. Seit dieser Zeit spukte ihr die Geschichte von Charlie Bone im Kopf herum, die sie erst ihren kleinen Geschwistern und später dann ihren drei Kindern immer wieder vor dem Zubettgehen erzählte. Ihre Kinder sind inzwischen erwachsen und sie lebt mit ihrem Mann David und der Fledermaus Kevin in einer alten Mühle in Wales.
