Published on the occasion oft he exhibition Egon Schiele 1890-1918, presented at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, this monograph traces the development of one oft he greatest draftsmen oft he twentieth century. The creator of a personal and uncompromising body of work, Schiele produced some three hundred canvases and several thousand drawings during his brief career. His style evolved, moving from the ornamental line of his early work - inherited from the Vienese Secession - to the fragmented line of his last years, reflecting the trauma oft he First World War. Schiele's drawings show human bodies with raw truthfulness; they are the expression of the artist's own inner demons and of his unsated existential quest.
