Pressezitat
"The image evoked by the title of this book is one of conversations among family members. It is in such gatherings under mango trees that Dr. Dickson A. Mungazi presents cultural aspirations of the African people struggling to carve a new image in an environment of conflict. Dr. Mungazi discusses both the roots and the fruits of those aspirations. With insight and persistence the author traces the interrelatedness that exists between the aspirations of this gathering and the changing political landscape set in anthropological themes. The strands of culture and politics are upbraided as the author interprets the knots and tangles that have resulted from a culture under stress." (Linda K. Shadiow, Northern Arizona University)"'Gathering under the Mango Tree' is obligatory reading for individuals who see themselves as 'citizens of the world'. Because most Westerners have been cheated of a thorough introduction to the complexities of the African continent, it's time the public had a chance to make up for the shortcomings of Western curricula. Mungazi's provocative volume makes up for many of those shortcomings." (Fredricka Stoller, Northern Arizona University)
"Assessing cultural influences on individuals and society is a challenging undertaking. Professor Mungazi addresses a broad range of topics as he steps up to the task. In doing so he focuses on important issues such as religion, medical practices, law and conflict, education and the influence of Western culture. And throughout his work there is an awareness and sensitivity to the dynamics of change." (Walter M. Vannette, Northern Arizona University)
