Funnyhouse of a Negro is Adrienne Kennedy's first experimental play.It tackles the experience of being a mulatto, provoking the perplexity of having bi-racial belonging with both blacks and whites. Sarah, a black student -nicknamed 'Negro', lives with Raymond in a rented house. In her room - or psychological inner space - Sarah is visited by many historical figures whom she portrays as "herselves": Queen Victoria, Duchess of Hapsburg, Patrice Lumumba and a hunchbacked Jesus. Her mother, who was a light-skinned Negro woman, was raped by her drunken husband. Unfortunately, Negro Sarah was the outcome of this rape. Replete with the emotions of remorse, guilt and resentment of his family, Sarah's father, killed himself. Ultimately and unable to reconcile between her desirable white identity and black identity, the protagonist commits suicide.
