Self-propagating combustion technique has wide range of advantages such as choice of different fuels, homogeneous product in a short time without the use of expensive high temperature furnaces, high purity, large surface area, etc. This synthesis technique makes use of the heat energy liberated by the redox exothermic reaction at a relatively low igniting temperature between metal nitrates and fuel. Most of the silicate phosphors were prepared by solid-state route which has several shortcomings over other methods namely prolonged reaction time, larger grain growth, poor homogeneity, etc. Consequently, high purity and low cost routes are required for the preparation of efficient display phosphors.
