The book treats in its first part various thematic elements of Buddenbrooks, e.g., Religion, Death and Disease, Language and Society, Servants, and the Rival Family. In its second part it deals with some of the shorter pieces of Mann's narrative fiction, among them Der Wille zum Glück, Gladius Dei, and Der Tod in Venedig. In both parts the analyses are based upon the method of close reading that tries to fill gaps in the existing critical literature or to approach its topics from a new point of view.

Ernest Wolf's essays will delight and enlighten anyone who is interested in Thomas Mann, from the casual - if that is possible - reader to the advanced student to the research scholar. The essays are informed, insightful, and laced with an appropriate wit. (Richard H. Lawson, Professor Emeritus of German, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) Ernest M. Wolf is one of the most eminent American germanists. He also counts among the most knowledgeable researchers of the works of Thomas Mann. The source studies and interpretations contained in this volume constitute important contributions to the critical literature about Thomas Mann. (Armin Arnold, McGill University, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada) Ernest M. Wolf's book has significant substance. All the essays in the book excel in clarity and attention to detail. Wolf's writing is informative and perceptive. (Rudolf Koester, Monatshefte)
