This work describes the development of a system modelof a power management system for hybrid-electricvehicles. An extensive survey about hybrid-electricvehicles in general and their differences to commonvehicles is given. In addition, advantages ofmodel-based development are outlined and severalmodel-based approaches regarding power management inautomotive systems are presented and evaluated. The system model is modeled asa multi-level heterogeneous closed-loop, whichcontains a high level controller and a low levelcontrolled system. The controller corresponds tothe Electronic Control Unit, which is normally usedfor power management. The controlled systemconstitutes the vehicle electrical system of ahybrid-electric vehicle. The heterogeneous systemproperty facilitates a high-level description of thecontroller as a state chart by means of MATLAB'sStateflow toolbox, whereas the controlled systemis completely modeled with the hardware descriptionlanguage VHDL-AMS on lower level with highaccuracy.The simulation of the heterogeneousstructure is carried out by a cosimulation withthe tool SyAD. Finally, the cosimulation results areanalyzed precisely.

Kirchsteiger received his Bachelor's andMaster's degree with distinction in Telematics (ICT: Informationand Communications Technology) from Graz University ofTechnology, Austria, in 2006. In 2006 he started a PhD inElectrical Engineering in Austria which he finished withdistinction in June 2009.
