The leading thread of this interpretation of Rousseau's social, political, and ethical thought is the concept of authenticity. This theme is present, in one form or another, in all of Rousseau's works, and it is especially in the formulation and discussion of the dilemmas implicity in the quest for authenticity that we find Rousseau's modernity and relevance today. In Rousseau's philosophy we find the first attempt in the Western tradition to respond to the new tensions of modern ethics. Many of the social, political, and moral issues which troubled Rousseau continue to plague our society. Thus Rousseau's insightful critique of modernity can be of great value in understanding the problems of contemporary life.

Pressezitat
"With an admirable concision and lucidity, Patrizia Longo Heckle provides us with a Rousseau who continues to speak to the fundamental political and personal problems of our day. Not since Marshall Berman's 'Politics of Authenticity' has a book done so much to illuminate the obscurities of his search for an authentic self." (Martin Jay, University of California, Berkeley)"This is a fresh book on Rousseau, which presents an almost existentialist Rousseau, very much in a European rather than Anglo-Saxon tradition. It integrates a great deal of scholarship in a non-pedantic way and it will appeal to a broad audience." (Patricia Springborn, The University of Sydney)
"This is a 'very' significant contribution which breaks new ground by means of a close and intimate reading of Rousseau's texts. This book is coherently and consistently argued, and it develops its argument clearly and logically from chapter to chapter. Rousseau has not been treated in this manner, or in this scholarly detail, in any of the available literature" (Paul Thomas, University of California, Berkeley)
