Der von Peter Koch und Wulf Oesterreicher 1985 erstmals veröffentlichte Ansatz 'Sprache der Nähe und Sprache der Distanz' kann als das erfolgreichste Modell zur Erfassung des Spannungsfelds von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit betrachtet werden. Zum Erfolg gehört dabei einerseits die breite Anwendung insbesondere in der germanistischen Linguistik in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Variationslinguistik, Spracherwerb und Medienlinguistik. Andererseits zählt zum Erfolg des Modells - wie bei allen Klassikern - gerade auch seine anhaltende kritische Diskussion.
