The Grey King is the fourth work of series of Susan Cooper's influential book-The Dark is Rising. The Grey King won the Newbery Medal Award. The story starts in Wales. After suffering from a serious illness, the protagonist Wale is sent by his mother to his relatives in the countryside of Wales for recovery, where he meets the boy named Bran. Bran has a white dog. Then, many weird things happen and enable Bran to recall his memory of the past. He finds that his ancestor has left him a mysterious prophecy and a magic weapon against evils in the darkness. To defeat the evils, Wale must find the golden harp and awaken six warriors in the deep mountain to win the approaching battle between light and darkness. The author contains her endless imagination between the lines and structures a magic world based on the real world. The exploration into children's mission awareness and sense of responsibility endows the work with strong realistic significance.
