When journalists Dale and Tammy Bryce arrive in the Norfolk coastal village of Sea Holme they want only to forget a part of their lives bound up in heartbreak. Three months earlier they lost their 10-year-old son Jack to leukaemia and they're hurting badly. But soon they find that this woodland-fringed community where they hoped to find solace has become the focus of terror. Something is killing first the animals, then the villagers in horrific ways. When Sea Holme is put into quarantine, under army control, no one is allowed either in or out. Since Jack's death Dale has lost his enthusiasm for life and especially for journalism, but now he and Tammy find they require more than a renewed spirit to deal with something that's not of this world. Dale and Tammy are joined by a damaged girl, 11-year-old Mary Craig, whose parents abuse her. Mary turns out to be a key ally of the couple in confronting an evil that no one else, including the army and so-called experts, fully understands.
