Alone in Germany, an estimated two to four hundred thousand people suffer from hemochromatosis.
Hence, the so-called iron overload is among the most common hereditary disorders. In the format of this short communication we will discuss, what the characteristics of hemochromatosis are and how it can be recognized at an early stage. The disorder is usually diagnosed in patients between 40 and 60 years old. Primary hemochromatosis has a hereditary cause, whereas the secondary form of iron overload occurs with blood disorders. Patients suffer from a particular form of diabetes mellitus and dark pigmentation of the skin (bronzing), as well as hepatic cirrhosis. Other clinical syndromes include hormonal imbalances, cardiomyopathy and other physiological changes. Patients show elevated serum levels of iron and increased concentrations of ferritin. Routine treatment consists in phlebotomies. Moreover, extreme challenges such as food items rich in iron must be avoided. An iron-reduced diet, however, cannot replace phlebotomies as a form of therapy.

PhDr. Sven-David Müller (www.svendavidmueller.de), MSc., ist Diätassistent und Diabetesberater der Deutschen Diabetes Gesellschaft (DDG). Er absolvierte seine Ausbildung an der Diätlehranstalt in Bad Hersfeld. Die Weiterbildung zum Diabetesberater erhielt er an der Uniklinik in Jena. Sven-David Müller hat angewandte Ernährungsmedizin studiert und ist Master of Science (MSc.) in Applied Nutrtional Medicine (angewandte Ernährungsmedizin). Daran anschließend hat er Gesundheitswissenschaften/Public Health studiert und ist PhDr. (Doktor der Philosophie in Gesundheitswissenschaften/Public Health). Sven-David Müller ist Autor von mehr als 236 wissenschaftlichen Artikeln, die in nationalen und internationalen Fachzeitschriften erschienen sind. Der ernährungsmedizinische Wissenschaftler hat sich insbesondere auf die Bereiche Diätetik und Ernährungstherapie bei metabolischen Erkrankungen (Diabetes mellitus, Übergewicht und Adipositas sowie Fettstoffwechselstörungen), gastroenterologischen Erkrankungen (Morbus Crohn und Colitis ulcerosa), Allergien und Unverträglichkeiten (Fruchtzuckerunverträglichkeit und Laktoseinoleranz) sowie hepatologischen Erkrankungen spezialisiert. Er ist Träger des Bundesverdienstkreuz und der Ehrenmedaille für Wissenschaft und Kunst der Albert Schweitzer Gesellschaft. Aus seiner Feder verzeichnet die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek mehr als 208 Buchtitel (14 Sprachen). Zu seinen Bestsellern gehören "Das Kalorien-Nährwert-Lexikon", "Die 50 besten Kalorienkiller", "Die Müller-Diät" , "Kalorien-Ampel", "Salz Ampel", "Low Carb Ampel", "Zimt gegen Zucker", "Ernährungsratgeber Gicht", "Das große Rheuma Kochbuch" sowie "Wir essen uns schlank" und die "Gicht-Ampel". Zudem hält er Vorlesungen und Vorträge, gibt Seminare und steht Krankenkassen, Verbänden und Organisationen als Berater und Experte zur Verfügung. Er ist beim Leibniz-Institut DSMZ - Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen in Braunschweig beschäftigt.
