Autoren-Porträt von Declan Varley
Declan Varley is a stunning voice in the great landscape of Irish literary fiction. His eye for local dialogue is unmatched. As an experienced award winning newspaper editor and journalist based in Galway, he has been documenting the west of Ireland since his teens. His bestselling hilarious cult classic Kittyland captured the essence of college life in the university town of Galway. He followed this up with Sure, It Could Happen, a collection of thematically-linked short stories set in Galway during the tumultuous year when it lost its biggest employer and its Roman Catholic Bishop resigned and fled after revelations he fathered a son with a divorcee. His success continued with The Elephants' Graveyard, a story of rural disintegration in the years before the Celtic Tiger. His first crime novel Nightmusic featured an ongoing psychological battle between a local police officer and an unassuming murderer. Rights options for his most recent work The Confession of Peadar Gibbons (2016) are with his agent Paul Feldstein of the Feldstein Agency. A master of the vernacular, Varley and his work astutely capture the changing Ireland of the last three decades. He lives in Galway with his wife broadcaster Bernadette Prendergast and their daughter Giselle.
