“Who would write who had anything better to do?” pondered the notorious Romantic poet Lord Byron. But although his poetry was at times harshly critiqued and even objected to, Byron passionately persisted with his writing of poetry. So much did he endure the process – such works as Childe Harold, The Siege of Corinth, and Don Juan – that he gave birth to a brand of poetry defined as brooding yet rebellious. That isn’t to say Byron was all work and no play. In between giving speeches at the House of Lords, Byron had affairs with Lady Caroline Lamb and Lady Oxford. In Geneva he sat up at night telling ghost stories with friends Percy and Mary Shelley. At thirty-six years old he had died, after going to Missolonghi to support the Greek War for Independence. Read more about this fascinating nineteenth-century poet in Byron, one of the many biographies in the English Men of Letters series.
Autoren-Porträt von John Nichol
John Nichol (1833-1894) formed the Old Morality Society in Oxford with Albert Venn Dicey, Thomas Hill Green, and Swinburne to discuss literature and, in 1862, went on to teach English literature at Glasgow College. He contributed an article on American literature to the ninth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Besides Byron, his biographies include Robert Burns and Carlyle.
