Produktinformationen zu „Flares and Graces … & Carnaby Street (ePub)“
Aged eleven, having been removed from the ghastly orphanage wedged between slag heaps in the industrial part of Northern France and where girls were better identified by their uniforms numbers than by their names, young Martha arrives in the City of Lights: Paris.
In this book, Miss Bertrand takes us on the chaotic journey of her adolescent years fraught with tough challenges, unexpected drama and surprising discoveries.
Quite apart from the excitement of being caught up in the May 68 Students Riots due to her schools location, Martha experiences close relationships and friendships which she had never been allowed to enjoy in the past and which leave her totally confused, but deliciously so.
The stark contrast between the cold, humourless nuns and the warm, ebullient friends she brings along becomes sharper as we witness her tumultuous life spent between schools and various countries where she is sent during the school holidays.
Alas, a free spirit is never welcomed within the confines of a strict convent school. Hence, in the inflexible mind of those in charge, there is only of one way to deal with it: tame it or crush it.

Autoren-Porträt von Martha Bertrand
Born in Vietnam of unknown parents and subsequently taken to France, Martha Bertrand spent her early years in an orphanage situated in the industrial part of Northern France, a period of her life she describes extensively in her first book: Little Angels Dont Cry. After leaving the orphanage, the author completed her secondary education in boarding schools in and around Paris, chaotic adolescent years which form the subject of her second book.
Gripped with the irresistible urge to travel, she then moved to Britain where she went to university and then graduated as a teacher. The author briefly taught in England before following her dream and moving to Scotland.
After two wonderful years teaching at The Mary Erskine School in Edinburgh, she took up a post at Gordonstoun School.
However, her first ambition was always to be a writer and after sixteen years teaching at the school, she decided to leave in order to concentrate on her writing career.
Never consider yourself a victim or a martyr for doing so will thwart your intellect and crush your spirit.
