Part adventure story, part philosophical meditation in the tradition of Saint-Exupery, Flying Lessons offers a fresh perspective on timeless problems of anxiety, depression, and relational conflict.
Each of the books eight chapters begins with a dramatic incident from Dr. Snyders 2000-hour flight log: the sheer terror of a total power loss, the disconcerting moment when the sky above becomes indistinguishable from the sea below, the sensation of spiraling toward the earth in a stall, the shock of emerging from a cloud bank to find a mountain peak rising dead ahead.
Dr. Snyder uses each of these flying stories to generate a metaphorical lesson about the nature of human relationships, illustrating general principles for sustaining joy and intimacy with case histories from his clinical practice.
Written in a straightforward, unpretentious, personal style, Flying Lessons is designed for everyone who desires a more exciting and intimate lifeand for everyone in the helping professions who would like to be more effective in their practice.
In his extensive practice as a clinical psychologist, Dr. John A. Snyder has helped hundreds of people learn to live more exciting and rewarding lives. Combining liberal theology and existential philosophy with Jungian and Sullivanian psychology, his innovative approach has shaped the practice of many psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and marriage and family therapists.
After receiving his doctorate in 1967, Dr. Snyder was appointed by the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine to train psychiatric interns and residents, using an approach to relational dynamics developed under grants from the National Institute of Mental Health.
Dr. Snyder has subsequently devoted his professional life to an independent practice of clinical psychology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In addition to flying, he is an avid sailor and dabbles in skiing and photography. He and his life-partner, Carolyn Mills, reside in the Chesapeake Bay town of St. Michaels.
