In the history of Ukrainian realistic literature, the work of Ivan Nechuy-Levytskyy occupies a prominent place. It is known that the development of artistic prose and, in particular, the great epic genres - novels and novels - is an important stage in the formation of the national art of the word. Entering the Ukrainian literary scene, Nechuy-Levytsky brilliantly developed the content and form of a small story and gave the first examples of a realistic, romantic genre of modern life. Roman I. Nechuy-Levytsky "Getman Ivan Vyhovsky" was published in 1898 in Lviv. This is the story of the family of Vyhovsky and the family of a simple Cossack Demka Lyutaya. It is through the biography of these two families that the writer seeks to show the situation in Ukraine after the Pereyaslav agreement and the death of Bogdan Khmelnytsky, the attitude of the common people towards the intentions of their leaders.
