International Finance and Open-Economy Macroeconomics provides a complete theoretical, historical, and policy-focused account of the international financial system that covers all of the standard topics, such as foreign exchange markets, balance of payments accounting, macroeconomic policy in an open economy, exchange rate crises, multinational enterprises, and international financial markets. The book uses the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference as a unifying theme to relate the many controversial issue. It is written in a lively manner to bring real world events into the discussion of all of the concepts, topics, and policy issues. There is also emphasis on the history of economic thought in order to explain how economists in different time periods dealt with international financial issues.

Hendrik Van den Berg is Professor Emeritus at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and he currently teaches at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. He received BA and MA degrees in economics from the State University of New York at Albany in 1971 and 1973, respectively, and MS and PhD degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987 and 1989. Between studying in New York and Wisconsin, Hendrik served as a Foreign Service Officer at the United States Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua and at the US Trade Center in São Paulo, Brazil. He left the State Department to work for the Singer Company of Brazil, also in São Paulo. After these adventures, Hendrik decided to return to his first love, economics, and enrolled at the graduate program of economics at the University of Wisconsin in 1985.... mehr
Hendrik has published over 50 refereed articles on exchange rates, international trade, alternative estimates of economic growth, the relationship between international trade and economic growth, and, most recently, the determinants and consequences of immigration on source and destination countries. Currently, he is examining the biases of neoclassical economics and the influence of the neoclassical paradigm on the fields of international economics and economic development. Hendrik has also written several economics textbooks, including Economic Growth and Development, 1st Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2001), 2 Ed. and 3. Ed. (World Scientific, 2012, 2015), International Economics (McGraw-Hill, 2003) and International Economics: A Heterodox Approach (M E Sharpe, 2011, 3. Ed. 2016), International Trade and Economic Growth (M E Sharpe, 2006), The Economics of Immigration (Springer, 2009, 2 Ed. 2013), and International Finance and Open-Economy Macroeconomics (World Scientific, 2010, 2015), which you are now reading. Hendrik also regularly writes for general audiences, including monthly articles on economic policy, peace, and social justice in Nebraska Report, the newspaper of Nebraskans for Peace. He is often invited to speak on economic development, immigration, foreign trade, and international finance.
