A shepherd boy, Dr JJ Klaas has a Bachelor of Pedagogics from the University of Fort Hare, South Africa; a Masters Degree from the University of Oklahoma, USA and a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of Cambridge, UK. He obtained Fulbright and Mandela Magdalene Scholarships. He taught at Rhodes University in South Africa. Later, he joined the South African government and worked as an expert to the United Nations Security Council in New York and as a diplomat in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
