The story takes place in the hometown of Secondary Saint Mencius - Shandong province. Mencius's 68th generation of descendant Meng Lechuan has an indifferent interest in the study of poetry and literature and acquisition of fame, instead, with the support of his mother, he founded Rui Fu Xiang Silk Shop. His cousin Gao Xianyang also abandoned school and went into business, and eventually became Meng Lechuan's opponent following the Japanese businessman Ichiro. As Rui Fu Xiang was oppressed by the local bureaucrats and foreign trade compradors, he had to seek patrons, and reluctantly dedicated Dong Mei to Yuan Shikai. Because of the considerable donations, he won the royal "e;Philanthropicminde"e; bluestone arch, but was unable to buy a palm burial ground in the ancestral holy land Menglin for his father and himself. Gao Xianyang bent to knock down Rui Fu Xiang.
