Produktinformationen zu „Otto of the Silver Hand (World Digital Library Edition) (PDF)“
In the superstitious and wicked world of twelfth century Germany lives a little boy whose compassion illuminates the path to goodness like a candle lighting the way through the dark coves of an ancient castle. “Poor little Otto’s life [is] a stony and thorny pathway” in which he faces ruthless and powerful villains. Alongside his faithful comrades, who rescue him from a dungeon, Otto learns to overcome strife with “gentleness and love.”Otto’s perilous adventures come to life not only through Howard Pyle’s meticulous descriptions, but also through his renowned medieval illustrations. The folkloric tale of Otto’s maturation from a child with a robber baron father to an adult with his own family will enchant the imagination.
Autoren-Porträt von Howard Pyle
Having grown up in a Wilmington, Delaware home filled with art and books, Howard Pyle (1853-1911) is esteemed as one of America’s greatest illustrators. His upbringing in the mystical teachings of Swedenborgianism, which taught him to do “good” influenced his writing and art. Having no enthusiasm for college academics, he instead studied under the Belgian artist F.A. Van der Weilen at a small art school in Philadelphia. His mother launched his career by submitting his work to Scribner’s Magazine, and after a three year stint in New York he taught at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia before opening the Howard Pyle School of Painting, which later became the Brandywine School of Painting. He died in Florence, Italy, where he had devoted himself to painting murals in 1911.
