Produktinformationen zu „The Christian Teachings of Charles Kingsley (ePub)“
The moral purpose of Charles Kingsley's novels is pronounced because he was a preacher, and more specifically, a teacher. He was above all a preacher of stirring didactic sermons. It is the didactic content of his writings—in his sermons, his novels, and his essays on natural theology—which is the study of this work. One too often forgets that Kingsley was not, in the first instance, a social and political reformer. As a preacher, and as a writer, he was pre-eminently a teacher—a theologian, yes, but more importantly, a Christian didactician. He was not an evangelical preacher, yet the Christian gospel was at the heart of his teachings and his moral exhortations. This work attempts to look at the Christian message that was the inspiration behind his socio-religious gospel.Writing at the time of Charles Darwin, Kingsley saw no reason to lose his sound Christian faith with the emergence of Darwin's theory of evolution. Instead, he could accept it as a means to a divine end, another example of how Providence might bring about the Kingdom of God on earth.
Autoren-Porträt von Charles Muller
Charles Humphrey Muller, MA (Wales), PhD (London), D.Litt (OFS), D.Ed (SA), was Professor and Head of the Department of English at the University of the North (now University of Limpopo) in South Africa for ten years, and Senior Lecturer in English at the University of South Africa before that. He is the author of numerous academic textbooks and literary studies published by Oxford University Press, McGraw-Hill and Macmillan, and was editor of Unisa English Studies and Communiqué, literary journals of the University of South Africa and the University of the North. In 1988 he left his academic career to move to Scotland where he bought a small hotel—the Kenmore Bank Hotel in Jedburgh, fifty miles south of Edinburgh—which he and his wife Joanne ran for eleven years. During this time he founded his editing and publishing business, Diadem Books. He has since written a number of novels (A Twist in Time, The Cage and the Cross, Wheel of Destiny, Continental Drift), and with his wife Joanne has co-authored two novels (Rapture at Sea and Spirit of Ecstasy by 'Carolyn Charles'). He wrote the inspirational work Have Anything You Really Really Want, and served as editor for his wife's 'self-help' book So You Want to Buy a Small Hotel! He also edited a collection of testimonies titled Touched by God and Refresh Your Heart in Jesus. After selling his hotel in Jedburgh in 2001, he and his wife have lived in the Great Glen of Scotland, Clashnessie in Sutherland, in Nova Scotia (Canada), in New Zealand, and the Kingdom of Fife.
