Produktinformationen zu „The Education of Henry Adams (World Digital Library Edition) (PDF)“
In The Education of Henry Adams, the author contrasts the suddenly outdated Romantic ideals of his immediate ancestors with the way the failings of his upbringing have left him adrift in an increasingly technological, disordered and even chaotic world. Adams argues that the political and social challenges of the late nineteenth century are rooted in this collapse of traditional values, expectations and ideals. It is the effort to reconcile the Romantic ideal of creative power as epitomized by the Virgin Mary with the power of disunity as exemplified by the Dynamo which gives the Education its prescient view of the century ahead.
Autoren-Porträt von Henry Adams
Henry Adams was born into nineteenth century Boston’s first family in 1838. His great-grandfather and grandfather – John Adams and John Quincy Adams – had served as U.S. Presidents. His own father, Charles Francis Adams, was well-regarded diplomat who served under Abraham Lincoln.Educated at Harvard, Adams spent his twenties traveling throughout Europe acting as private secretary for his father. On his return he tried his hand at journalism before accepting a medieval history teaching post at Harvard in 1870. Though some of his biographies received mixed reviews, acclaim was almost unanimous for his nine-volume History of the United States of America During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (1889-1891).
