The arrogant gang of intellectuals attending a conference at Prigley University never once expected that the 'objects of study' in the audience would ever start talking back to them, and actually speaking for themselves.
The conference participants lurch from one self-congratulatory presentation to another, until the climax of the novella, where the arrogant intellectuals encounter their hero, Klubber Bonez.
It turns out that the fate of this washed-up humanitarian pop-star is deeply bound up with that of the Prigley University intellectual mafia.
