A SERIES THAT WILL LEAVE YOU THINKING ABOUT THE CHARACTERS LONG AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED READING IT
Book One: On Herring Cove Road: Mr. Rosen and His 43Lb Anxiety
Once an amusing extrovert with a reputation as a prankster, Mr. Rosen is entering his senior years as a stoic, thirty-year converted introvert who hates change, has little to no interest in people and is more than content to have his wife sit in the navigator's seat of his life. Since becoming a practicing introvert, there have been almost no changes in his life, and for the few that there were, his wife had walked him through them, including the recent move to a much smaller home in a lower/middle-class neighbourhood where he lives directly next door to a racist whose pint-sized nine-year-old son addresses him as Mr. Jew.
Mr. Rosen had seen the move coming, and he is very much aware of the enormous change to come sometime in the, hopefully, far-off future; though, he refuses to give it any attention. That change will come on slowly and painfully and will eventually force him to chart his own life's route.
This heartwarming, feel-good novel offers a rollercoaster ride of emotion as Mr. Rosen's habitual world begins to implode while on a collision course with the chaotic world of an innocent and pint-sized nine-year-old boy, his troubled mother and vengeful father.
Book Two: Still on Herring Cove Road: Hickory, Dickory, Death
The first murder of a child raised eyebrows; the second raised alarms.
Ten-year-old Dewey is moving, and he couldn't be more excited; though, he's alone in his enthusiasm. Lisa, his mother, and recently retired Avriel, his next-door neighbour and best buddy, don't share in his excitement regarding the move from their suburban bungalow to a dirty basement level apartment in the lower class area, where two murders have recently occurred.
This sometimes lighthearted and at other times intense novel follows naive Dewey as he befriends two 'different' streetwise boys, learns the pros and cons of friendship and is then stalked by a killer preying on children.
Book Three: Off Herring Cove Road: The Problem Being Blue
With Blue's father in prison for selling marijuana and his mother estranged for over the last seven years, Blue is doing well, all considering. As the second addition to the not-so-nuclear Dixon family of Lisa, her ten-year-old son, Dwight, and the retired, Jewish introvert, Av, Blue finds himself living in a much better area of Halifax, Nova Scotia, going to a much better school and for the first time, actually applying himself academically as he struggles to fit in.
All that's soon threatened when Blue's estranged mother returns to take him away, and around the same time, he's harassed and threatened by his father's affiliation with the very dangerous, local biker gang to whom his father owes money.
Blue, his surrogate family, and Dwight's recent overachieving classmate/friend, Lyon, are forced to deal with the quickly escalating problems that threaten both the family unit and its members.
ABOUT THE SERIES
The evocative and not-so-nuclear family saga series, Herring Cove Road, follows a small group of troubled individuals as they accidentally come together to form a family unit, and then while struggling to maintain it, are forced to deal with its dark results, such as: racism, death, murder, suicide and much more.
With his newfound love for writing novels, Michael turned his first novel, On Herring Cove Road: Mr. Rosen and His 43Lb Anxiety, into the not-so-nuclear family saga series Herring Cove Road, with each following novel also in the contemporary and family saga genres but with subgenres of a Murder Mystery, Crime, and a love story.
With the series Herring Cove Road completed, Michael is now working on the first novel of an amusing, heartwarming and historically-accurate family saga that begins with an English immigrant, William Lovely, and his younger brother, James, coming to America in 1715 through indentured servitude, and then follows the future nine generations up until 1905. The series is tentatively called The Lovely American Family Tree, and the first novel in the series is tentatively titled Indentured Love.
Michael Kroft is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, single and, apparently, with too much time on his hands.
