The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman | A 15-Minute Summary & Analysis
Preview:
Even as a young girl, Rachel Pomie defied the rules. Growing up in a Jewish society in the early 1800s, Rachel felt more like her father's son than her father's daughter. Rachel was bright, and her father taught her the family business as she grew. However, it was well-known that her cousin would inherit the business once her father passed. With business failing, Rachel is coerced to marry a much older man in order to save the family business. Taking on three stepchildren and four more, she is left a young widow with the promise of love.
Love does find her: in the form of her late husband's cousin. Since he is considered family, she is forbidden to marry him. However, love is stronger than tradition. Rachel marries Frederic, and she has four more children with him. One of the children, Jacobo Camille, is much like his mother. He dreams of things that are considered impossible. Showing a prowess at art from an early age, he refuses to be molded into what his parents want him to be. With Camille's skills and Rachel's dreams, they end up defying convention and setting their own rules. In the end, they get what they dream of: Paris.
