ROLAND MULDOON was born in Weybridge, Surrey, in between air-raid warnings. He left school in 1956 and worked in many jobs, ranging from Brixham fish sorter to chainman on the new Victoria line. He studied Stage Management at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. It was in this city that he teamed up with life-time partner/wife, Claire. In 1963 they joined the Unity Theatre before setting up the legendry underground theatre group CAST. Eventually they had two children, which has led so far to two grandchildren. In 1980, Roland received a Village Voice OBIE award for his one-man play, Confessions of a Socialist. In 1981, CAST created a New Variety circuit in London featuring a new wave of comedy. In 1986, the group took over the iconic Variety Theatre, the Hackney Empire. When they parted company with the Empire in 2005, they left behind a fully refurbished theatre. Roland co-starred in the US movie Bucharest Express. He is currently writing his Hackney Empire memories, Taking on the Empire, as well as helping setting up www.newvarietylives.co.uk.
