In an ever-changing world, such as soccer's, only intelligence may truly help, since, besides being able to act effectively, it is essential to know how to think about the best way to act. Therefore, in the more recent years of modern soccer, the tactical component has been increasingly valued and diffused. Particularly in Brazil, this dimension of sport performance has been studied and applied by many professionals of this field, from the youth academies to professional level.
This book was conceived to help those who devote much of their time to improving the quality of the game, and to training highly enlightened, creative and intelligent players. Hence, this work presents procedures and ideas that, besides assisting in the task of evaluating the tactical performance of soccer players and teams, also allow improving their expression throughout the learning and training phase.

Professor Israel holds a PhD in Sport Sciences at the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto, with emphasis on tactical behaviour assessment. He spent a year as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Sport Sciences at Brunel University London, with emphasis on decision-making assessment. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Soccer at the Department of Physical Education of the Federal University of Viçosa and is in charge of the Postgraduate Course in Soccer and of the Centre of Research and Studies in Soccer. Professor Israel leads a research line on Cognition and Tactics applied to Soccer at the Lato-Sensu and Stricto-Sensu Postgraduate programs. He is the author and co-author of several works published in journals and books, of national and international circulation. He is a member of the editorial board of scientific journals from Brazil and abroad. Professor Israel is a lecturer at the coaches development program of the Brazilian Soccer Federation since 2005. He has conducted studies in European clubs and worked at the academies of América Futebol Clube/Brazil and other Brazilian Football Clubs.

Professor José Guilherme holds a PhD in Sport Sciences and is a lecturer at the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto. He is in charge of FADEUP's Football Office and is a member of the Centre of Research, Education, Innovation and Intervention in Sport and of the Centre for Team Sports Studies. Professor Guilherme is an instructor in soccer coaching courses at different levels and also in international courses held by soccer federations, universities and clubs. (1991-1993) and FC Porto's (1998-2008) and (2011-2013) academy levels, at Académica de Coimbra (2010-2011), FC Porto B (2014) and as assistant coach of the Portuguese National Team (2008-2010), having worked at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He is currently the head coach of the Portuguese National U-17 Soccer Team.

He is the author of several works published in journals, proceedings and books, and is on the editorial board of scientific and technical journals. Over the last 25 years he has been taking part in the development of teachers and coaches in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Professor Garganta has worked as a consultant at FC Porto and Sporting CP, in the context of observation and interpretation of the Soccer game. Since 2010, he has carried out an identical function at Portugal National Team AA, being present at the final stages in Euro 2012, in Poland/Ukraine, and in the 2014 World Cup, in Brazil.
