It has been inhabited by ancestors since antiquity and seen the formation of many towns and villages in the past centuries.These towns were built by the rivers, with streets and markets along the watercourse, which result in an exquisite layout. Whitewashed walls and black tiles, small bridges and running water, ancient streets and deep alleys all exude a rich flavor of rural Jiangnan and constitute a unique regional cultural landscape.These towns also differ from each other due to geographical and cultural characteristics.Since the 1980s, Chinese rural economy has developed rapidly. After modernization most ancient towns have lost their original flavor.Luckily, Wuzhen, Nanxun and Xitang in Zhejiang Province as well as Zhouzhuang, Tongli and Luzhi in Jiangsu Province were preserved in time.In recent years, these ancient towns were further reasonably renovated by experts, which restores their historical appearance and turns them into precious cultural heritages of humanity.
