To start with, the term Jurisprudence emanates from a Latin word Jurisprudentia broadly speaking it means knowledge of law . In this regard the Latin term Juris means law and prudentia means skill or knowledge. Jurisprudence therefore presupposes knowledge of law and its application. However, it should be noted that, the word Jurisprudence has been given different meaning at different times. The non-convergence is due to the technique of inquiry and approach to the study of the subject matter. This in turn leads us to the traditional technical division of Jurisprudence into five main branches or schools of Jurisprudence. The divisions were based on certain basic assumption about law characterized by Jurists belonging to each school which distinguishes from those of other schools.
