This book documents an investigation into the design and optimization of emergency shelter systems for use in high wind areas. Specifically, an investigation into existing shelter systems available for use in emergency situations by the US armed forces. Each existing shelter system was reviewed against several performance parameters. As a result of this investigation, it was concluded that existing shelter systems do not provide adequate solutions for emergency shelter conditions. During the second phase of the investigation, a panelized FRP composite building system was developed with improved member and connection capacity.The building system was optimized for structural performance and connection behavior. This optimization was performed on both a global, system wide level, as well as for localized stress behavior.

Bradford, NickDr. Nick M. Bradford received his BAE and MSAE in Architectural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1992 and 1993. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from The University of South Florida in 2004. He is a licensed Professional Engineer, Structural Engineer and Special Inspector in Tampa, Florida.
