A systematic review of our current knowledge of the development of the universe by the observation of galaxies at high redshifts. The monograph describes the most important physical principles that are incorporated into models of the evolution of individual galaxies and of the galaxy population as a whole. These are linked in turn to empirical results so as to derive a basic understanding of galaxy evolution and to identify the outstanding questions about the formation and evolution of galaxies. In so doing, the book makes use of a wide range of observational and theoretical techniques, along with their strengths and limitations. The introductory methods chapter makes this particularly suitable for young researchers entering this rapidly evolving field, as well as master and PhD students.
Inhaltsverzeichnis zu „Galaxies at High Redshifts “
1 Introduction. Basic review of galaxy properties in the present-day Universe, including individual galaxies and the overall population, physical scaling laws etc. Historical overview and perspective of high redshift galaxy research. Also the broad cosmological context of concordance CDM cosmology and cosmogony.2 Observational tools I - physical measurements in an expanding Universe (a practical guide)
3 Observational tools II - observations of faint galaxies: technicalities of detection and measurement, photometry, spectroscopy, photometric redshifts.
4 Observational tools III - selection and completeness of samples, construction of population statistics (e.g. luminosity functions, correlation functions etc., descriptions of environment such as groups and voids).
5 Observational tools IV - astrophysical measurements of individual galaxies, e.g. morphologies, sizes, masses, metallicities, stellar populations, derivation of scaling laws etc.
6 The current observational picture - major surveys of high z galaxies and the main empirical results as in 2007, including evolution with respect to local population.
7 Physical basis of models of galaxies and galaxy populations, e.g. numerical simulations of internal evolution and mergers, and semi-analytic models, etc.
8 Comparison of models in (7) with observations in (6), leading to major unanswered questions
9 Critical experiments of the future to address questions in (8): ALMA, JWST, TMT, SKA etc
Autoren-Porträt von Marcella Carollo, Simon Lilly
Marcella Carollo has seen a distinguished career at prestigious institutions, including LMU, Munich (Germany)and Columbia University, New York (USA). Currently she holds a professorship at ETH Zuerich (Switzerland).Numerous awards and publications, including a book, prove her standing.Simon Lilly is also a professor at ETH Zuerich.Holding degrees from Cambridge and Edinburgh (UK),a research fellowship has taken him to Princeton. He serves in various committees, e.g. in the ESO Science and Technology Committee, and heads the IAU Commission #47 on Cosmology.Their research interests focus on the observations of various stellar objects at different redshifts to unveil answers to cosmological key questions.
