It is vital to note that goldfish have inhabited the water of the Tahoe Keys since the 1990s but a giant goldfish have never been seen since then. According to conservationists the massive goldfish which can grow up to 1.5 feet long, is far from being a native to the lake and is believed to have been dumped there by aquarium owners. Scientists have highlighted that aquarium dumping has become a common practice in the United States and elsewhere. Alarmingly, aquarium dumping is now taking a toll on native wildlife. A recent report on California's aquarium trade found that fish owners and importers are introducing hardy, nonnative aquatic species to California waters.
