Job-related stress and sleep disorders among college presidents

Over the last 15 years job-related stress has become
a major health concern for many employees and family
members. In a recent gallop poll survey, 71% of
respondents rated their job as their primary cause
of stress. In addition to the usual and customary
demands of a job, the recent downsizing, mergers,
and layoffs have created more insecurity for many
workers. Symptoms associated with job-related stress
include depression, anxiety, fatigue, headaches and
sleeping difficulties. Fifty percent of sleep
disorders, in particular insomnia cases, are
attributed to anxiety, stress, or depression. Many
times, this tension or anxiety is a result of job-
related stress. In addition to the employee s
potential problems, the employer may also face
serious business-related issues. In a recent study,
55% of the participants agreed that lack of sleep
made a severe impact on their abilities at work.
This book describes a study that examined the
relationship between college presidents and job-
related stress levels and sleep disorders, and
methods used to reduce stress.
