"Refreshingly voice-y, wildly smart, and genuinely hilarious" Casey McQuiston, New York Times bestselling author of Red, White & Royal Blue on Don't Hate the PlayerZora Lyon is a number-crunching, zero-bullshit, strategic prodigy and founder of Team Vision - certainly not the romantic type. But Vision are down a player for the start of the Wizzard League tournament. And so enters Ivan Hunt aka VANE, formerly of the disbanded Team Fury. He seems genetically designed to get on Zora's nerves from his unnervingly chill attitude to his irritating good looks.
Then, at the league orientation, Wizzard unveils new character skins for the players, rendered in awful stereotypes. Zora tries to speak out but is shut down until Jake (of the infamous Emilia and Jake #relationshipgoals) agrees with her.
Zora gets a taste of press attention before it's snatched away when Jake and Emilia do something cute and the eSports golden couple suck up the attention once again. So Zora and Ivan decide to post a picture of them cuddling to draw the attention back to where it matters. Their photo takes off like wildfire - perfect.
What could possibly go wrong?
Autoren-Porträt von Alexis Nedd
Alexis Nedd is the author of Don't Hate the Player and is a Brooklyn-based pop culture "fanthropologist" who has only ever loved things in a big, obsessive way. As the Senior Entertainment Reporter at Mashable.com, she covers television, movies, and video games with a focus on sci-fi and fantasy universes like Game of Thrones and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When she's not writing for money, she's writing for no money on Twitter, where her feed consists of deep dives on weird history (Hamilton and messed-up royal lineages are favourites) and analysing pop culture as an artefact of society. Her writing has also appeared in Elle, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and BuzzFeed. @alexisthenedd
