Oil, Diamonds, and Human Rights in the Marketplace

This book explores the processes and outcomes of twoUS social justice campaigns against the violenceassociated with extractive industries in SierraLeone, Angola and Sudan: The Campaign to EliminateConflict Diamonds and the Capital Markets SanctionsCampaign. The book provides a narrative of thecampaigns and advances two arguments. It challengesthe notion that social movements cohese on the basisof commonality of principle and argues that based onthe studies, ideologically diverse coalitionparticipants can successfully prosecute campaignsbased on strategic operationalization. Secondly,most social movement scholarship is state centric inits analysis of the opportunity structures thatenable mobilization and movement processes. This bookillustrates that opportunities for social justiceaction also reside in the free market and aretherefore better understood through a tripartiteinstitutional, discursive and strategic opportunitystructure framework of analysis.
