With the surge of popularity of PHP 5, object-oriented programming is now an important consideration for PHP developers. This version-neutral book is a gentle introduction to object-oriented programming (OOP) that won't overburden you with complex theory. It teaches you the essential basics of OOP that you'll need to know before moving onto a more advanced level, and includes a series of prepackaged scripts that you can incorporate into your existing sites with the minimum of effort. It shows how object-oriented programming can be used to create reusable and portable code by walking you through a series of simple projects. The projects feature the sorts of things developers run up against every day, and include a validator for filtering user input, a simple Date class that avoids the need to remember all the esoteric format codes in PHP, and an XML generator.
- Teaches the fundamentals of OOP
- Simple projects show how OOP concepts work in the real world
- Prepackaged scripts can easily be added to your own projects
PHP is still one of the most popular web-programming languages, currently ranked number 4 on the Tiobe Programming Community Index (http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm). A large section of the PHP community still use PHP4 (only 26% of sites have migrated to PHP5 - over 3 years since its release), but as of 08/08/08 PHP4, and all support for it, is being discontinued. This will mean a lot of people will finally be making the switch to PHP5, which introduces OOP concepts to the language. IT also means the book can be written version neutrally, meaning that any PHP5 (or 6) user will be able to use it.
This book introduces readers to the benefits of OOP and code reusability. It presents code and concepts through a series of short, but practical classes that can be immediately incorporated into an existing website.

Autoren-Porträt von David Powers
David Powers is a professional writer who has been involved in electronic media for more than 30 years, first with BBC radio and television and more recently with the Internet. He has written or co-authored eight books on PHP and ActionScript, including the highly successful The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS3 with CSS, Ajax, and PHP and PHP Solutions. He is an Adobe Community Expert for Dreamweaver, and provides regular support and advice on PHP and other aspects of web development in several online forums. What started as a mild interest in computing was transformed almost overnight into a passion, when David was posted to Japan in 1987 as BBC correspondent in Tokyo. With no corporate IT department just down the hallway, he was forced to learn how to fix everything himself. When not tinkering with the innards of his computer, he was reporting for BBC TV and radio on the rise and collapse of the Japanese bubble economy. Since leaving the BBC to work independently, he has dedicated himself to website development and writing.
When not pounding the keyboard writing books or dreaming of new ways of using PHP and other programming languages, David enjoys nothing better than visiting his favorite sushi restaurant. He is the Honorary Editor of the Japan Society in the UK, and has translated several plays from Japanese.
