He has gained great fame among espionage enthusiasts for his intelligence gathering during World War II. He worked as a journalist in both Germany and Japan, where he was imprisoned for spying and eventually hanged. His GRU codename was "Ramsay". He is widely regarded as one of the best spies in world history.Sorge was born in the settlement of Sabunchi, suburb of Baku, Azerbaijan, which was part of Imperial Russia at the time. He was the youngest of the nine children of Wilhelm Richard Sorge (d. 1907) a German mining engineer and his Russian wife Nina Semionovna Kobieleva.
