This project research summarizes the status of the shrimp sector in 2011 including both fishery and farming in Madagascar with a focus on direct and indirect social, economic and environmental impacts. The study reviews the current situation, the key challenges, as well as the best alternatives found and the trade-offs made. In Madagascar, the shrimp sector is facing various structural problems which have led to the closure of several commercial operations and loss of jobs. This occurred as a result of combination of complex factors: (i) loss of market share in main market, falling price in international market and high cost of production; (ii) incapacity of the shrimp fishing sector to reconcile economic interest with the sustainability of natural resources; (iii) enforcement costs. In Madagascar, shrimp is the most valuable fishery export. However, the economic importance needs to be reconciled with considerable concerns about the environmental impacts of shrimp fishery and farming. Targeted readership: academics, students, researchers, national competent authorities and shrimp exporting companies to EU, US and Japan markets.
