After the Vampire Books of Anne Rice, the Sookie Stackhouse series was my second best loved vampire series I ever read, and I read it right from the start. The story took place in the southern US, at a time when vamps were already common for the people there in their daily lives, as well as other kinds of "Sups" like shifters, (werewolves and werepanthers) and even elves... Most about such I´ve read before, e.g. at the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, which I also love. Laurell was there before, to let act besides Vampires the werewolves and other shifters too (maybe in 1993, and the Sookie Stackhouse series started in 2004). The idea was not brandnew anymore. But where the books about Anita Blake have their dark erotic touch, the Sookie books are very much more humor and fun, but sex&crime is there also. Sookie is going to tell her story from her perspective, she is a mind reader, which sucks most of the time, because she is a waitress also, and there are many guest with weird thoughts around her most of the time. That she isn't able to read the minds of the vampires, is a whole new experience for her, and she likes it very much. Why she falls for Bill...
I was over 30 when I started reading, but I can tell you my mom loved the books too, there is fun for every age, when you are open to it. Later on I had to read the books in English instead of German, because I couldn´t wait for them to be translated soon enough. And when the maker of my beloved TV series "Six feet under" started to make a series of the books about Sookie, I was really amazed. The characters in "True Blood" were very great cast, you have to love them because of their personality and originality. But to read the books before is better - as always, when you are able to let your own fantasy direct your head cinema (sorry for my English) ;) Now I like to re-read everything, long after I read it first, and long after I've seen the True Blood series, to let it play out again. And wait in the meantime also for the next books of the other amazing beloved writers.
